Why does eSIM compatibility vary by device?
eSIM support depends on whether the phone has the embedded chip built in at all, and that's a hardware decision made model by model. Even within the same phone line, support can vary by region: some carrier-specific or regionally sold variants ship without eSIM support even when the same model elsewhere has it. A carrier-locked phone can also block eSIM installation until it's unlocked, even on hardware that technically supports it. Which phones generally support eSIM?
As a rough guide (always confirm with the checker above for your exact model):
- iPhone: XS, XS Max and XR onward support eSIM; iPhone 14 and later sold in the US are eSIM-only, with no physical SIM tray at all.
- Samsung Galaxy: support generally starts with the Galaxy S20 line, though some models, including the S20 FE and several lower-tier A-series phones, don't support it even though they're a similar generation.
- Google Pixel: support generally starts with the Pixel 3 and 3a, though regional availability has been inconsistent on some early models.
